How to use this spreadsheet

Open the workbook and go to the How to Use sheet for five short steps. Start by entering your planned income on the Monthly Budget sheet in the five income lines. Then fill in planned amounts for each of the 18 expense categories. As the month goes on, enter your actual income and expenses in the actual columns. The workbook automatically calculates what is left for each category and the percent used. It also shows your leftover amount and breaks down your spending into needs, wants, and savings as a share of income. Use the printable PDF to write down your budget by hand if you prefer. The example numbers in blue cells show you how to fill it in, and the gray cells calculate for you. This spreadsheet helps you track where your money goes each month and see if your spending matches your plan.

Tips

  • Update the actual columns at least once a week so you always know how much is left in each category.
  • At the end of the month, copy the sheet and clear the actual numbers to reuse the same template for the next month.
  • Adjust the 18 expense categories to match your own spending by renaming them in the workbook.
