How to use this printable
Print the PDF at actual size on US Letter or A4 paper. Give your child a pencil or crayons. On page 1, ask them to say the name of each picture out loud, then circle the letter that makes the beginning sound. On page 2, have them trace the dotted beginning letter for each picture, then write the letter on their own. Use page 3 as an answer key to check their work. This activity helps children practice hearing the first sound in words and connecting it to the correct letter. It builds phonemic awareness and early writing skills. The child learns to identify beginning sounds for the letters j, k, t, v, w, and z. They also practice fine motor control through circling, tracing, and writing. Keep the session short and positive, letting the child work at their own pace.
Teaching tips
- To make it easier, say the picture name slowly and emphasize the beginning sound, like 'zzzzebra' for z.
- To make it harder, ask the child to name another word that starts with the same letter after they finish each picture.
- Reuse the pages by placing them in a plastic sleeve and having the child use a dry erase marker.
Questions and answers
Is this worksheet too hard for a 4 year old?
It is designed for ages 4 to 6. A 4 year old may need help saying the picture names and may only complete a few items. You can start with page 2 tracing if circling is too challenging.
How should I print the PDF so it fits correctly?
Print at 100 percent or actual size in your printer settings. Both US Letter and A4 paper sizes work, so choose the one you have.
Can my child use markers instead of a pencil?
Yes, crayons or markers work fine. Just make sure the writing tool is not too thick for the small spaces on the worksheet.
